Last week, Maja Korsgaard Henriksen, Head of Green Energy & Sustainability at Baltic Control® Certification, together with ISCC and REDcert auditor Laurent Fournier, had the pleasure of visiting Jeppe Bjerg and Dorte G. Kristiansen at Energinet for a professional and constructive dialogue on the handling of Guarantees of Origin in connection with the trade of biomethane, as well as the EU requirements for the implementation of the Union Database (UDB).
As the TSO, Energinet is responsible for Denmark’s integration into the UDB, while Baltic Control® brings more than 10 years of experience with the implementation of RED II/III. This created a strong foundation for a valuable dialogue around expectations, roles, and implementation processes.
The discussion focused on the interaction between certification requirements, Guarantees of Origin, and the system solutions needed to support traceability and compliance across the value chain — including different end-use segments and market applications and with aim of understanding the risks of double-counting. The emphasis was on sharing experiences, challenging each other’s perspectives, and building a common understanding of opportunities and key considerations related to the upcoming UDB implementation.
It was a very rewarding first meeting, clearly demonstrating the value of early dialogue and close collaboration between certification bodies, system operators, and other industry stakeholders. We did not manage to cover all intended topics, and therefore a follow-up meeting has already been scheduled. The next step will be to further explore how UDB requirements can be implemented in a way that is both regulatorily robust and operationally manageable for Danish biogas market participants, while remaining fully compliant with RED II/III.
Thank you to Jeppe and Dorte for an open, knowledgeable, and constructive exchange 🤝
